Let's talk about how we can get there

Investment Advisory

Investments for Long-Term Wealth

Our investment principles highlight key decisions that help you effectively target long-term wealth in the capital markets. As your financial advisor, we adhere to these principles and help you stay on course toward your goals.

Our Investment Principles

Embrace Market Pricing

The market is an efficient information-processing machine. Each day, the world equity markets process billions of dollars in trades between buyers and sellers - and the real-time information they bring helps set prices.

Don't Try to Outguess the Market

The market's pricing power works against mutual fund managers who try to outperform the market through stock picking or market timing. Only a small percentage of US equity mutual funds and bond funds have outperformed their benchmarks over the past two decades.

Resist Chasing Past Performance

Some investors select mutual funds based on their past returns. Yet, past performance offers little insight into a fund's future returns.

Let Markets Work for You

The financial markets have rewarded long-term investors. Historically, the equity and bond markets have provided growth of wealth that has more than offset inflation.

Consider the Driver of Returns

Expected returns depend on current market prices and expected cash flows. Investors can use this information to pursue higher expected returns in their portfolios.

Practice Smart Diversification

Diversifying within your home market may not be enough. Global diversification can broaden your investment universe.

Avoid Market Timing

By holding a globally diversified portfolio investors are well-positioned to seek returns whenever they occur.

Manage Your Emotions

Many people struggle to separate their emotions from investing. Reacting to current market conditions may lead to making poor investment decisions.

Look Beyond the Headlines

Daily market news and commentary can challenge your investment discipline. When headlines unsettle you consider the source and maintain a long-term perspective.

Focus on What We Can Control

As your financial advisor, we provide expertise and guidance to help you focus on actions that add value - which can lead to a better investment experience.

We focus on what we control.

Let's talk about what we can do to help

Leveraging Academic Research Allows Us to Focus on What We Can Control

As a firm, we believe that in liquid markets, prices reflect all available information. Our strategies are focused on the dimensions of higher expected returns and seek to add value through portfolio design and implementation.

Our Investment Methodology

Asset Allocation

Academic research has provided evidence that asset allocation is the single most important element in a portfolio strategy and accounts for over 90% of a portfolio's performance.

Global Stock Diversification

We achieve broad stock diversification by investing in a wide range of asset classes using mutual funds and exchange-traded funds. We then follow the overall allocation of the global market by aiming for a world-market cap-weighted portfolio of U.S. and non-U.S. stocks.

Dimensions of Expected Returns

The size of a company influences its expected return, with the stocks of smaller companies offering higher returns than stocks of larger companies over time. Value stocks tend to outperform growth stocks in the long run, so it is advantageous to overweight exposure to value stocks relative to the global market capitalization.

Global Bond Diversification

Our bond allocation is designed to be the stable reserve within the portfolio. We work along several dimensions to minimize macroeconomic risks. We achieve stable optimization by investing globally in bonds with shorter maturities, that have a low correlation to stocks, and that are investment grade.

Investing Your Money

Your money will be invested according to your Investment Policy Statement. We invest your money directly into the market if your money is currently invested. If your money is not currently invested, we utilize dollar-cost averaging to reduce the risk of market volatility.

Opportunistic Rebalancing

Our rebalancing policies help to reduce risk and increase returns by capturing periodic buy-low/sell-high opportunities. It is through this disciplined approach to rebalancing we can capture the full benefits of diversification.

We focus on what we control.

Let's talk about what we can do to help

Tax-Smart Investing

The objective behind tax-smart investing is to try to enhance the after-tax returns of an investment portfolio. As a CPA, we have the experience and expertise to practice tax-smart investing.

What Does This Mean for You?

Manage Short-Term Gains

The tax rates on short-term capital gains are higher than those on long-term capital gains. We consider the differences in tax rates when evaluating selling an investment or rebalancing a taxable portfolio to try to avoid paying higher tax rates.

Harvest Tax Losses

When an investment is sold for less than its purchase price, the loss can be used to offset realized capital gains and, potentially, a small portion of taxable income. We practice tax-loss harvesting throughout the year, not just at year-end, to look for more opportunities to help our clients reduce taxes or offset gains.

Manage Exposure to Distributions

Mutual funds distribute earnings from interest, dividends and capital gains. We offer tax-efficient mutual funds and exchange trade funds (ETFs) to take advantage of deferring capital gains.

Take Tax-Smart Withdrawals

When a client wants to withdraw money from a taxable account, choosing the investments to sell can significantly impact the investment allocation and their tax bill. Selling investments to fund a withdrawal can also impact the level of risk in the investment portfolio.

We Use a Variety of Techniques Designed to Help Reduce Potential Tax Impact

When it’s time for you to withdraw money from your account, we’ll work to ensure the withdrawals on your investment portfolio are tax-efficient and that your investments remain aligned with your goals.

We focus on what we control.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a fiduciary?

A fiduciary is someone who is on your side. The fiduciary standard we apply to our investing ensures that choices made are always in our client’s best interests and ahead of the firm’s interests. A fiduciary is legally and ethically bound to act in a client’s best interests at all times.

What does it mean to be fee-only?

As a fee-only firm, we only charge for financial planning and investment management - we do not make a commission based on products or investments that we include in our portfolios.

Additionally, we offer a flat fee for our financial planning services, which will be provided to you with no hidden charges later on.

What does it mean to be independent?

When we say we are independent, we mean that we aren’t tied to a particular brokerage firm or to a particular investment strategy. We have the creativity and insight to take what you have and create the best possible portfolio to secure your financial future.

Why a financial advisor who is CPA?

Every part of the financial planning process has tax implications - with 35 years of experience in the accounting world, we have the knowledge to make sure you are tax efficient with your investing by looking at marginal tax rates, capital gains and losses of your investments, and your overall financial situation.

What kind of clients do you work with?

We work with clients in all walks of life, but primarily with:

  • Couples entering or in retirement
  • Young families looking to plan for the future
  • Veterans and government workers
Where are your clients located?

As a Northern Virginia based company, we primarily serve the DC Metro area, but we have clients across the country from Florida to California. At this time, we only work with clients in the United States.
